Another quick fix lunch. Frozen mixed veges. Chunky. Ground chilli paste. Light soy sauce. Freshly cooked rice. Toss them in a wok. Fried rice. As it looked quite – forgive my use of conflicting adjectives – frighteningly red and deliciously beckoning, Made a spiced buttermilk rice to cool the system. Fried sago and rice crackers.

Vegan. Noodles, veges, tofu in Tomyam soup.Soup Simmering on Stove
No cooking done the entire day. I meant, I did not cook. The others did. Lunch, whilst I was hard at work was a beautiful chillied kangkung and elephant yam fry, perfectly coated with spices. With some rice and leftovers. And in the evening, after a lengthy session of music practice and learning with my Guru, Daughter 1 served up, Noodles, Tofu and Veges in Tomyam Soup. Vegan. Perfect for a cold night. I call it A Warm Bowl of Love.

The simplest of lunches. Rice. Rasam/lentil soup. Thayir satham/Rice and Curd tempered with spices. With oranges, peel and apple thrown in for good measure. Vadagams. Chips. On a full on Sunday of classes, a half hour lunch prep, a walk, then lunch.

Sunday’s dinner. Sabudana kichdi. Fried sago pearls. I would be remiss if I didn’t post.. Disasters too. Soaked sago pearls. In a little water. For ages. Sprinkled more water. Stared and stared in the hope that I might stare and scare them into behaving. I’d over estimated the amount I’d soaked. They obviously misbehaved and doubled. Anyway, stoically, diligently, unwaveringly, stubbornly followed recipe.
Generously smothered sago with coarsely powdered, roasted, deskinned peanuts. Added tiny cubes of boiled potato. Salt to taste. Tempered cummin, chopped green chillies, and fried the sago mix. Covered and cooked for a bit. Threw in for good measure, fresh grated coconut and coriander leaves.
For husband and me. As we watched a Tamizh movie – Kalyana Samayal Sadham, which loosely translates to Wedding Feast. How appropriate (not).
Girls insisted on ordering in their first takeout after ages – mozzarella stuffed crust pizzas, then disappeared.
Husband promptly got the sniffles and sneezes as sago has a cooling effect on the system, and not recommended to be consumed at night. Nothing an antihistamine and steam inhalation wouldn’t cure.

Tonight’s Dinner. Pav bhaji. A vegetarian version of The Burger. Fast food. Mumbai Street food. Maharashtrian origins. Soft buns. Buns were store bought baps and My very own Straight off the oven freshly baked milk sesame buns. Slathered with butter, grilled. Topped with a generous spicy vegetable and potato mash. And garnished, nay, generously sprinkled with finely chopped raw onions, fresh green chillies, lemon juice. Served to a hungry household of 4 and a guest. Dessert was a family favourite. One can never fail with apple crumble. Oats, wholemeal flour, brown sugar, raw sugar, sliced apples, lemon juice, and butter of course. Some had it plain, some with chocolate brownie icecream.
Apologies for the above ramble. My inspiration was the incessant ramble of the My Kitchen Rules’ contestants.

NachosStuffed capsicum Stuffed and ready to be baked Fruit upside down
A lunch. Rose early to prep these as it was going to be a full on work from home day. Okra kuzhambu/gravy. Bitter gourd/karela chilli curry with coconut water and coconut milk. Mushroom potato fry. Heated up the day before’s leftovers. No photos to share though.
Dinner was a hotchpotch of unrelated dishes. Daughter’s friend visited so we had Fries (frozen, store bought and baked). Nachos with salsa, cheese, jalapenos. Stuffed capsicum (stuffed with lunch’s mushroom potato stir fried with cauliflower granules, green lentils and red quinoa, topped with cheese and baked).
Made a quick dessert of upside down fruit cocktail cake. Would’ve preferred it a little less dry and more sweet. Girls and friend compensated by saturating it in chocolate brownie icecream.
In anticipation of the double episode finale of The Amazing Race, earlier this week, Made mullangi/radish rotti for dinner. To be served with lunch’s kuzhambu and raita/tempered yoghurt. Had a class until 9.30 so husband decided to serve up some delicious spicy vege potato cutlets. Watched The Amazing Race on demand TV while chomping on our rotties and cutlets. And stoked that the team I was rooting for, had won!
On a side note, Lunch, was white pumpkin kuzhambu/gravy, creamy nokkol/kohlrabi, paneer chilli fry. And lentil rasam/soup. Had these with quinoa.
Fried mee meehoon. Vegan.Green chilies in soy sauce
Dinner a few nights ago.
Hot cup of tea, a slice of glaced lemon cake, and Netflix K drama after work. Zoom music classes until 8.
Fried up mee and meehoon with cabbage, capsicum, mushrooms, dried mushrooms that look like anchovies/ikan bilis. Yup you guessed right, I have a lot of cabbage and red capsicum in my fridge. Served up with a small side of green chillies soaked in soy sauce.
Settled down to watch part 1 of finale of Amazing Race. Hubby and I are rooting for 2 different teams. Not googling to find out who actually won. Oh no.
A belated Mother’s Day post. I had some Zoom music lessons and all the little ones appeared 10 to 15 minutes late. When I asked them gruffly why, they all said they had made mom breakfast or had made cupcakes. After that I couldn’t be mean. My girls over hugged me, and I kept wiping my face as I do not like slobbery kisses. Then I was shown a video featuring me, with me following their dance moves, me holding a wooden spoon, me in my batik housecoat with my white hair. I was told that was just going to be on the family chat groups, I have not seen it thus far and I believe it is now floating in cyber space. I now know why I have not been allowed to install Tik Tok or get a Tik Tok account. Daughter 2 baked a lemon glace cake which I have hidden and am polishing off during my work breaks and as dessert after meals. Husband announced he would prep dinner and made a fragrant yellow coconut milk rice and something delicious that resembled Mushroom Manchurian. He did say the dish was Roadside Mushroom. How by the side of the road that dish could be during lockdown is beyond me, but the proof is in the tasting. Lipsmacking deliciousness. And then I watched Korean dramas on Netflix – so romantic, so cute, and had pleasant dreams!! That was my day, Love and blessings to all of you. And let me reiterate this forgotten unknown “Mother is a verb. It’s something you do. Not just who you are.”
An early start to a long day. Sneaked out during lunch time to whip up something quick and easy. Meaning, get off chair, slide door, enter kitchen. A fried rice. Lied to family that it was a briyani. Added fridge leftovers, then added fresh cabbage and capsicum. Made some spiced buttermilk/more, mashed a day’s old rice, mixed it up to make mor satham. Fried rice and sago vadagams, appalams
